John Hoppner gained success as a painter from an early age. In 1775 he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy and by 1780 was exhibiting on a regular basis. Hoppner only showed at the Academy and throughout his lifetime exhibited 161 paintings. His portraits were much admired, and in 1789 he was appointed portrait painter to the Prince of Wales. In 1793 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy and by 1795 he was a full Academician. Hoppner was acclaimed for his brilliant and mellow colouring. His style was clearly influenced by Reynolds. Here we see Mrs Fox in the foreground, portrayed against a detailed landscape. Hoppner’s skill in landscape painting can clearly be seen, though it is unfortunate that he didn’t have the opportunity or the time to develop his work in this area.
