A half-length portrait on an oval stretcher facing slightly to right. She wears a loose rust-coloured gown edged with blue and a white lace-edged underdress. Her hair is loosely pinned at the back as she looks out of the picture space to meet the gaze of the viewer. The sitter was Mary Bland, later Mary Nelson, wife of the Reverend Edmund Nelson of Hillborough, and grandmother of Lord Nelson.
