Born in India, Chowne studied at the Slade School from 1893 to 1899 as well as in Rome and Paris. He began to exhibit at the New English Art Club in 1903 and became a member two years later, when he also commenced teaching painting at Liverpool University. He remained in Liverpool until 1908, and was a founder of the Sandon Studios. Chowne’s first one-man exhibition was held at the Carfax Gallery in November 1911. His works were also exhibited at, among others, Agnew’s, the Baillie Gallery, Goupil, the Leicester Gallery and the London Salon. Chowne travelled extensively in Spain and France before the outbreak of the First World War, when he joined the Artists’ Rifles. Commissioned in the 9th East Lancashire Regiment, he served with the Salonika Force in Macedonia.
