Ada Lewis-Hill (1844–1906) is depicted in this grand full-length portrait wearing a white silk or satin evening dress with a pink overlay garment which partly covers the bodice, with a decorative pearl brooch at the lace neckline of her dress and a heavy dark fur coat. Her jewellery comprises a heavy gold chain with a round charm, which she wears on her right hand, along with a fawn glove. Her left hand is ungloved and shows off her rings, worn on her wedding finger. Her feet are not depicted. She also wears a diamond tiara and earrings. The Ada Lewis Scholarships were founded by Ada Lewis in July 1901 and supported such musicians as Sir John Barbirolli and Dame Moura Lympany for their training at the Academy. She also presented one of the Academy's treasures, the 'Habaneck' violin by Stradivarius, c.
