Richard Suett (1755–1805) appeared at the Drury Lane theatre from 1780 until his death. He specialised in Shakespearian clowns and other comic parts. The role of Dicky Gossip in Prince Hoare's 'My Grandmother', which he created on 16 December 1793, became one of his most celebrated. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1797.
