Henry Ricketts, a Bristol glass manufacturer famous as the inventor of a new bottle-moulding process, sits on the table. He collected Edward Bird's paintings, so the artist was a natural choice to paint this family portrait. Ricketts is shown with his wife, children and parents-in-law in a farmhouse near Banwell, south of Bristol, where he rented shooting rights. Details include the glass 'witch ball' hanging from the ceiling. These were hung to ward off the Evil Eye and acted as a kind of charm to divert the attention of witches and also to cure sickness.
