John and Hannah Burton were the father and mother of William Burton, the Wollaton Wheelwright, whose letter, written in September 1830, was found in the ceiling of the Great Hall of Wollaton Hall in 1954 in the course of renovations. The letter was subsequently presented to the Museum by Alderman H. Bowles, then Chairman of the Estates Committee. Hannah Burton was the daughter of Micah Gedling, JP after whose family Gedling Grove, Nottingham, was named.
