The quotation on which the painting is based is taken from the opening paragraphs of Chapter One of Emily Brontë's novel 'Wuthering Heights', when Mr Lockwood, the narrator, first meets Heathcliff, then owner of Thrushcross Grange, where Mr Lockwood has taken out a tenancy. Painted in a late-Victorian romantic style, it was donated by the artist, who specialised in painting scenes from the lives of famous public figures, and from novels.
