This large group-portrait depicts Mr Joseph Hatfield, a miller and corn merchant from Sutton upon Derwent, as he shows samples of wheat to a well-dressed group of men sitting around a table.

The grains of wheat are being burnished with a fine red cloth, and money is on the table in front of Mr Hatfield. The other sitters are all from around York: Mr T. Belt of Walmgate, Mr W. Garbutt of York – Corn Merchant, Mr Bowman of Elvington – Veterinary Surgeon, Mr Joseph Hatfield, Mr Henry Warneford Senior of Copmanthorpe – Farmer.

Three of the men wear top hats, and Mr. Hatfield wears a richly flowered waistcoat. The scene may be taking place in a Corn Exchange, when the value of the crop is being decided.
