The artist said about this piece in 2007: "I have always been aware that my dark and sombre images, although reflecting reality, do not sit easily in today's brighter and more colourful surrounds. I have always suggested location on or under the staircase giving a momentary glimpse of a bygone age. I was wondering if it was possible to paint a colourful abstract (mosaic) of images in bright colours that from a distance would read as an abstract on closer examination reveal part images that for some, would stir memories from the past. I am encouraged that early indications are that with the appropriate frame, perhaps gold, it would sit well in today's lighter surrounds. It was based on four images of miners working in restricted coal seams interspaced with vignette reminders of their lifestyle, the banner and drum representing the Durham Miners' Gala Day.
