The work is Gothic style in a Ruskinian manner and in the style of Eleanor Crosses. The monument is octagonal in shape and is constructed in three stages. The steps at the base are surmounted by a tablet bearing an inscription. Above this, on the second stage are eight columns supporting carved canopies. Beneath four of these canopies are recesses containing four symbolic figures representing Justice, Truth, Oratory and Literature. The next stage consists of Mansfield stone, placed round an octagonal shaft, and decorated with the coats of arms of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Immediately over these are four large griffins, grasping the arms of the Lewis family. An ornamental spire springs from the last stage, surmounted by a carved cross having a circle entwined at its centre.
