A memorial stone of chiselled rock on top of a brick base. On the north-west face is a plaque with an inscription. Pilot Officer McMullen served with the Canadian Royal Air Force, stationed at Middleton St George. On 13 January 1945 he was returning to base following a training mission, when an engine caught fire 10 minutes from landing. The accident report stated 'From the evidence given, it is considered ... It is also noted that the pilot retained control of the aircraft sufficiently long enough to avoid crashing into the built-up area of Darlington'. Together with other RCAF personnel, he is buried in Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate.

Inscription description

on north west face, incised in black letters on a steel panel: Erected in memory of Pilot / Officer William S. McMullen / of the 428 Squadron Royal / Canadian Air Force who on / 13th January 1945, stayed at / the controls of his burning Lancaster bomber KB793 / until six members of his crew had parachuted to / safety and the aircraft was clear of densely populated / areas of the town. He died when it crashed / about 600 metres south east of this plaque at / Lingfield Farm and was buried at Harrogate / with others of the R.C.A.F. McMullen Road / was named in tribute to his courage; (engraved image of the Royal Canadian Air Force Coat of Arms)
