on the northern side of the pedestal: SALAMANCA. / MADRID. / RETREAT OF ARANJUEZ. / PYRENEES.; on the eastern side of the pedestal: MASSENA'S RETREAT. / CAMPO MAYOR. / FUENTES D'ONORO. / BADAJOZ.; on the south side of the pedestal: BUSACO. / REDINHA. / CASAL NOVA. / FOZ D'ARONCE.; on the western side of the base: LIEUTENANT COLONEL ALEXANDER HOPE PATTISON, K.H., / COMMANDER OF THE TROOPS IN THE BAHAMAS, &c., &c., / AFTER SERVING HIS COUNTRY TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS / WITH HONOUR & FIDELITY / DIED AT NASSAU, NEW PROVIDENCE, ON THE 11TH JANy., 1835, / AGED 48 / THIS MONUMENT TO HIS WORTH AND SERVICES IS ERECTED / BY HIS FRIENDS & FELLOW-CITIZENS. / 1838; on the northern side of the base: A.D.
