on sculpture: GIBRALTAR RELIEVED OCT'R 11TH 1782 / THE FRENCH FLEET DEFEATED / JUNE THE FIRST 1794; on plinth: ERECTED AT THE PUBLIC EXPENSE, TO THE MEMORY OF / THE ADMIRAL EARL HOWE, K.G. / IN TESTIMONY OF THE GENERAL SENSE OF HIS GREAT AND MERITORIOUS SERVICES / IN THE COURSE OF A LONG AND DISTINGUISHED LIFE, & IN PARTICULAR FOR THE BENEFIT / DERIVED TO HIS COUNTRY , BY THE BRILLIANT VICTORY WHICH HE OBTAINED / OVER THE FRENCH FLEET, OFF USHANT, 1ST JUNE 1794. / HE WAS BORN 19TH MARCH 1726, AND DIED 5TH AUGUST 1799, IN HIS 74TH YEAR.
