Lincoln grew up in Kentucky and Indiana before settling in Illinois, where he worked at odd jobs. He educated himself in law and served one term in Congress 1847–1849. After returning briefly to the law, he was provoked into renewed political activity by the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which removed barriers to slavery in new states. He joined the Republican Party and was elected President in 1860. Immediately faced with the threat of Southern Secession, he took summary powers to prepare the Northern states for war. He proclaimed that, from 1 January 1863, all slaves in the rebellious districts would be made free. He won a further presidential election in 1864 but, just over a week after the after the war's end, he was assassinated by a fanatical southern sympathiser.
