This portrait of Joséphine Bowes' grandfather is said (in John Bowes' catalogue) to have been copied from a chalk drawing in the Museum's collection taken when he was imprisoned in 1792. During the French Revolution, Mr Sergent led a battalion in the Vendean War, which saw Revolutionary troops fighting those supporting the king. On his return to Paris he was falsely accused and condemned to death in 1792, but escaped the Guillotine. He is represented wearing a striped red and white jacket, whose pattern resembles that worn as trousers by the revolutionaries or 'sans-culottes'.
