The artist was a friend of Miss Shlehover's father. The painting is signed and dated 1910. Miss Shlehover was enrolled as a member of London/38 Voluntary Aid Detachment in September 1914 and undertook various duties, working with Belgian refugees and as a housemaid and later Assistant Quartermaster at hospitals in Balham. She was mentioned in Dispatches in January 1919.
