Miss Arbuckle was the cousin of William Rowat and after the death of his wife in 1873 she devoted her life to raising his four children, the eldest being Jessie Wylie Rowat, who married Fra Newbery (Director of the Glasgow School of Art). She is remembered with the following inscription on William Rowat’s family memorial, to be found in Woodside Cemetry in Paisley ‘MARGARET ARBUCKLE / Died 12 Dec 1892 / In memory of Margaret Arbuckle / Our cousin in name but mother in truth. Those to whom as motherless children she opened her heart loved and cherished keeping the sunshine of a mother’s alive in their young lives now as man and women arise and call he blessed. Jessie, Margaret, Robert and Mary Rowat.’
