Expressionistic portrait of Miss Anne Knox as a young woman, in the domestic setting of a house interior. She is seated against a curtain backdrop. The folds of the curtain are represented by single vertical brushstokes and the design of the curtain is marked by playful and simplistic brushwork in pale pinks and purples. This portrait is highly reminiscent of Matisse's interior paintings where pure colour and form are heavily accentuated. Indeed it is true that modern styles such as this were introduced to Britain during this period. Miss Knox wears a sky blue jacket with a salmon pink blouse and a choker of pearls.
