This extensive frieze is split into three sections illustrating the industries of Stoke-on-Trent and the sciences. On the left side four miners are depicted with the tools of their trade and a Davy lamp. One the right side four potters, three men and a woman, are depicted with a potters' wheel, kiln and finished vases. In the central panel a seated, winged female figure in classical dress with a naked winged boy standing at her side holds a book open on her lap; she personifies learning. On her left and right sides sit two female figures in classical draperies; the chemistry apparatus and the set of scales beside them identify them as personifications of science. The Cadman Building housed the Central School of Science and Technology, where pottery, mining and general sciences were taught from 1914.
