Philip Toft's interest in art did not really begin until after he left school. His father, who later went on to become a local playwright, used to take him to visit galleries where he developed an admiration for the works of Leeds-born artist Atkinson Grimshaw (1836–1893). Shortly after that point Toft took up art himself and he continues to paint in his spare time. His father wrote a number of radio plays involving mining villages and the 1984–1985 strike and was clearly a motivation behind the creation of these paintings, which were undertaken over a 10-year period.
