Captain Ferdinand Edward Reiss and his wife Phyllis, who owned Tintinhull House during the war, were Michael Lucas's uncle and aunt. The Pool Garden there was created as a memorial to Michael, and it was in his memory that Phyllis Reiss gave the property to the National Trust. The portrait was donated by Michael’s younger brother.
