Commander Michael Higham (b.1936) was the Grand Secretary, or Chief Executive, of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1980 to 1998. This portrait was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England and is one of a series of portraits of past grand secretaries. It shows Michael Higham standing in the Grand Secretary’s office at Freemasons’ Hall, London. On the wall behind him hangs another of the United Grand Lodge of England’s paintings, a portrait of Freemason Sir Lionel Darell (1742–1802).
