Mercury is identified by his winged hat (Petasus) and sandals, the right of which Cupid is tying to his foot. Mercury’s right arm is raised pointing to the sky, his left hand to the ground, perhaps in a gesture of flight. The figure is given added strength by the introduction of a piece of drapery falling from his right hand down his back and attaching it to his buttocks. A fold of this is used to cover his genitals. The winged Cupid at the feet of Mercury is seated, with his quiver on his back and his bow lying on the ground. It seems probable that the statue originally held Mercury’s winged wand, the Caduceus, in his right hand.
