A market cross in Melrose, dating from the sixteenth century, which appears to be in its original location but is thought to have replace an earlier cross which stood in front of the abbey gatehouse. Only the upper part of the shaft survives from the sixteenth century; the capital is believed to have been renewed in 1645 by the fourth Earl of Haddington, while the lower part of the shaft is a restoration and the base dates from the nineteenth century.
