On 28th September 1853 the ship 'Annie Jane' with emigrants from across the UK and beyond heading for Quebec became caught in a number of storms the vessel was eventually wrecked on Vatersay. Over 350 men, women and children died and were interred in two mass graves somewhere in the sand dunes. There were 102 survivors.

On 28th September 1853 the ship Annie Jane with emigrants from Liverpool to Quebec was totally wrecked in this bay and three fourths of the crew and passengers numbering about 350 men women and children were drowned and their bodies interred here.
