Lych gate opening onto a small paved area at the centre of which is a free-standing memorial. The memorial is formed of a two-stepped base, surmounted by plinth and capped column. At the four corners of the base are cast bronze dolphins. A bronze figure of the Madonna is placed against one side of the column. Plaques within the lych gate contain dedicatory inscriptions and the names are inscribed on the memorial. A bronze lion head is placed on each of the posts around the edge of the paved area. On each face of the column is a bronze panel: two of these depict an anchor within a wreath, one depicts a Viking ship and one depicts a medieval ship.
