to the front of the base: TO THE MEMORY OF / PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY / BORN AT FIELD PLACE IN THE COUNTY OF SUSSEX AUGUST 4TH 1792 / DROWNED BY THE UPSETTING OF HIS BOAT IN THE GULF OF SPEZZIA JULY 8TH 1822 / HIS ASHES ARE INTERRED IN THE PROTESTANT BURIAL GROUND AT ROME / ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF / MARY WOLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY HIS WIDOW.
