On the plinth is a bas-relief portrait of the late mayor in a bronze medallion surrounded by a wreath and scrolls in high relief, the other two sides bearing the inscriptions. The top of the plinth is also highly decorated with images of scrolls and the arms of Carlisle.
Originally erected on the Eden Bridge’s south-eastern end it was moved in 1970 to enable the building of a ring-road and new roundabout, yet in 1971 it was re-erected in the new gardens close to its original position. Instead of its previous placement on six steps, it now rests on a two-stepped base, and has recently been painted white, with some red and gold detailing.
