In 1947 John Minton and the writer Alan Ross visited Corsica. Minton and Ross wrote a book the following year entitled 'Time was Away: A Notebook in Corsica'. Writing about their trip Ross said, 'It was rugged travel; the hotels where we stayed were basic and often dirty. We lived on bread, cheese, figs, pastis and wine'. This visit to Corsica inspired Minton to paint with a brighter palette. At the time of painting, food rationing was still an established part of life in England and the pile of melons in the foreground would have appeared exotic to a contemporary viewer.
