Meenakshi, whose cult is centred on the city of Madurai in southern India, is considered an avatar of the much better known goddess Parvati, the consort of the god Shiva. She is shown holding an oil lamp while a parakeet sits on her right shoulder. A domestic ritual statuette, she holds a usable oil lamp out in front of her, so that the owner can light a flame in veneration.
