The work is of brick (rusticated to the ground floor) with stone dressings. The main roof is not visible but features a copper dome to the tower. It is Renaissance style, with low-relief busts in the entablature of Shakespeare, Newton, Reynolds and Tennyson, and an inscription plate above (including a quote by Milton) with enriched scroll-work and a broken pediment below balustrading surmounted by urns.
