Portrait of a boy wearing a classical dress, with bay wreath and holding a spear.

Prince Maurice of Bohemia was the fourth son of Frederick, Elector Palatine (formerly King of Bohemia), by Elizabeth, Princess of England, daughter of James I. The sitter was born at Castle Custrine, belonging to his father's brother-in-law George William of Brandenburg. It was to here that they fled after the Battle of Prague at which King Frederic was deposed. Prince Maurice was drowned when his ship was overtaken by a hurricane and sunk off the Virgin Islands. He accompanied his brother Prince Rupert, who commanded the cavalry in the Royal Army for their uncle Charles I.

Stylistically the present work would seem to date to c.1629–1630.
