The British oboist Maude Melliar is depicted with her oboe, with both of her hands on the keys. She wears a black dress and fur collar and her hair is parted in the centre. A wedding ring is also shown. As a student at the Royal Academy of Music, she played in the concert to celebrate the official opening of the new Academy building in Marylebone Road (22nd June 1912); her oboe partner was another exceptional female player, Leila Bull. Maude Melliar is said to have won, in 1901, the first wind instrument scholarship at the Academy which was opened to women.
