Matthew Ridley Corbet was a portrait and landscape painter. Born in South Willingham, Lincolnshire, he studied art under Davis Cooper, then at the newly opened Slade School, and later at the Royal Academy Schools. Corbet was much influenced by G. F. Watts until, in 1880, he went for three years to Italy, where he studied under Giovanni Costa in Rome and gave up portrait painting for landscape (mainly views of Italy) and occasional figure subjects. Corbet exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery from 1871, at the Royal Academy from 1875 until 1892 and at the Paris Salon from 1892 to 1897.
