This painting is a pretty, characteristic picture of the artist's later period. His handling of paint has become rich and broad, much looser than in his early career. Master Richard Meyler is shown in a girl’s frock which was customary until the boy was 'breeched' at four or five years old. He became MP for Winchester at twenty and died aged twenty-six.
