Depiction of an elderly man, shown half-length in profile and a young boy, also in profile; both are dressed in plain robes. The man on the left is the boy's teacher; he looks down towards his pupil who stands on the right, holding a scroll of paper. Upon the dark wall in the background, is a plaque decorated with the head of a putto and floral ornament, with the inscription: 'EPANNONEAPELLI / EDEINEEYNNIAEYEIA' (sic). This would have originally read in Greek: 'BPABEION ARETH / ETIN EY AI EYEIN', which translates as 'the prize of virtue is having good children'.
