This picture entered the collection in 1939 from the former Barking Museum as a portrait of Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke, attributed to Federico Zuccaro. However, Zuccaro was only in England in 1575, when Mary would have been about 14, so he could not have painted her as the mature woman seen here. Even if this were to be a different sitter, practically all attributions to Zuccaro of British portraits have been rejected or questioned.
