Printed on the reverse of the canvas is the title 'Lady Mary Leslie'. However, family records suggest that this may well have been Elizabeth Leslie, Mary's sister, and that the (much later) attribution is incorrect. The Leslies were a prominent local Catholic family who were generous benefactors to the Church; not only in terms of funding but also several family members entered the priesthood and the convent.
