This portrait was painted when the sitter was a young girl and she is shown with brown, tied-back hair. Hugh Hughes, artist and author, was born at Pwll-y-gwichiad, Llandudno, the son of Thomas and Jane Hughes. He was educated in a school kept by his grandfather Hugh Williams at Meddiant, Llansantffraid-Glan-Conwy. Hughes is notable for his clashes with the Calvinistic Methodists. This painting is attributed to Hughes on the basis of its close similarity to a number of portraits of children painted by the artist in the mid-1830s.
