Mary Anderson worked for the Red Cross during the First World War, and she was based in the 2nd Red Cross Hospital for British Officers in Rouen, France. The artist Adrian Hill, who trained at St John's Wood School of Art, served with the Honourable Artillery Company from 1914. At one point his artistic skills were noted and he was appointed to the scouting and sniping section, where he drew the general terrain for record purposes and sniper positions. He was allowed to visit messes and found that Officers would ask him to do drawings for them. It is understood that, as a result of one of these visits, that Mary Anderson's fiancé, Lt Col. Denis Ramsay Akers Eley DSO, who was also based in northern France at the time, requested that he paint the portrait of his future wife.
