Mary Ellen Peacock was the eldest child of the novelist and poet Thomas Love Peacock. In 1849 she married the novelist George Meredith. Their temperaments were not compatible, and in 1857, she eloped with the artist Henry Wallis.

This is the only surviving portrait of her and shows her in the intimacy of a domestic setting.
