Flint specialised in painting the female nude, usually in watercolours. His larger oil paintings were often intended for public collections with a view to enhancing his reputation as a serious artist. In these he often included literary or vaguely classical references to justify what might have been seen as gratuitous nudity. This picture takes its subject from a little known novel by the American writer Brett Harte.
