A Victorian Gothic memorial. The steepled design is based on the Eleanor crosses erected in the 1290s by Edward I in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile. The upper arches enclose sculptures by Henry Weekes I of the Protestant martyrs Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley. Built 300 years after they were burnt at the stake and funded by Anglican clergy to reflect the Protestant and anti-Catholic stance of Oxford University. It was fully restored in 2003.
