Astrophysicist and Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Director of the Institute of Astronomy (1977–1982 and 1987–1991). Astronomer Royal since 1995. Rees's current research interests are in 'extreme' cosmic phenomena, black holes, cosmic structure formation and 'dark matter'. He is interested in both scientific and philosophical aspects of cosmology. Publications include Before the Beginning (1997) and Our Final Century (2003). Benjamin Sullivan has regularly exhibited in the BP Portrait Awards. In 2007 he won the Lynn Painter Stainers Prize and the Bill Patterson Memorial Prize (NEAC). Sittings for this portrait took place at Trinity College, and the college arms can be seen on the plate in the foreground. The laptop on the table shows an image of a protostellar nebula, one of Rees's recent research interests.
