Displayed in the Dining Room of Kinloch Castle, this portrait shows Martha Bullough, née Smith, mother of John and grandmother of Sir George Bullough. The painting matches in both frame and size that of her husband James; similarly it is unsigned or dated. James Bullough and Martha married in 1824, while he was an ‘overlooker’ at Rodgett’s Cotton Mill in Preston, Lancashire. In the course of their 46 year marriage they had four daughters and three sons, the eldest and middle son were set up in business in their own account, while the youngest, John, was destined to join his father and John Howard in what became the Bullough family business. James and Martha Bullough are buried in the family vault in Christ Church, Accrington. Following the death of John Bullough in 1891, Howard & Bullough converted into a private limited company.
