Lieutenant Colonel James Stewart and Williamina Kerr were married on 18th December 1802, as the late eighteenth-/early nineteenth-century costume suggests. However, this painting is dated 1846–1849, so is likely to be a retrospective or a copy of an earlier portrait.

Stewart joined The Black Watch as a Lieutenant in 1777. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1804, and died in 1819. The painting is a particular favourite among the Museum staff as it is one of the few paintings depicting a woman. Add to that the pensive look on Williamina’s face, and the adoring stare of her husband – an amusing topic for discussion.
