Stewart joined The Black Watch as a Lieutenant in 1777. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1804, and died in 1819. The painting is a particular favourite among the Museum staff as it is one of the few paintings depicting a woman. Add to that the pensive look on Williamina’s face, and the adoring stare of her husband – an amusing topic for discussion.
