Folding fan commemorating the marriage in 1770 of the Dauphin Louis (future Louis XVI) and Marie Antoinette. Painted in a particular shade referred to as Bleu de France, the leaf features portraits of the newlyweds with their respective coats of arms on either side and a swathe of ermine. The verso is painted with a courting couple and an elderly man holding aloft flaming hearts above an altar.

The royal union consolidated diplomatic relations between France and Austria who, until 1756, the year in which the terms of the Franco-Austrian Alliance were agreed, had been adversaries for more than three centuries.
