The word 'Marra' means ‘mate’, ‘friend’ or ‘buddy’, in the dialect of North East England. The jagged hole in the statue's chest represents the ripped-out heart of a community; it was the artist’s response to the erection of a statue to Margaret Thatcher. Horden’s pit was one of the last in the region and closed in 1987.
