This painting has a label at the back which reads ‘Marianne and Fanny, daughters of Robert Ingleby’ and cousins of Clement M. Ingleby. The lineage of the Ingleby family shows that a Rupert Ingleby (son of William Ingleby) had two daughters, Marianne and Fanny, both born in the 1830s. Their Regency style costume and basket of produce is intended to display the wealth of the family.
